Well...see back home, there are three kinds of ponies - pegasi, ponies with wings who took care of the weather; unicorns, ponies with horns and magic; and Earth ponies, who grew food on the ground. The three types of ponies didn't always get along, and we celebrate Hearth's Warming Eve for when that all changed.
