Nobody here plays water glasses, right? [The look on Maya's face should tell you that this in, in fact, a Very Serious Question.] If you do, I kind of need your help. I can pay you? A little bit?

[Maya taps her lip, like she's thinking.] I would also appreciate your help if you happen to play keys or drums. [Snapping her fingers, Maya grins.] Oh! Or xylophone piano. Or bass.

Actually, if you play any kind of instrument, even if it's the kazoo, and you wouldn't mind helping me with something super important then I would super appreciate it if you responded.

*He sees the note on the way out of his room and walks over to Maya just as she's finishing the public announcement.*

Drums or guitar, kiddo? Afraid I'm a bit rusty on the piano.

*He's been in a pretty sulky mood ever since the virus ended, but he's not going to be a downer when someone's planning a party.*

Drums, I think? [There's a bunch of staff paper scattered over her desk, some of them crumpled, and Maya shifts through them.] Because I can cover guitar if I have to.

[She holds up a page of sheet music.] Can you read sheet music?

I'd be a shitty musician if I couldn't.

*He reaches for the page.*

Gonna have to keep the drums out here if I get 'em, though.

Hey, I've met people who only play by ear and can't read a single note. [Maya hands the page over.] I don't mind so long as they're not, like. In front of the fridge or anything.

Hey now, that'd be a damn waste of good food, blockin' it off like that.

*He looks over the sheet in question.*

Exactly! Let me know if you don't understand anything, it's kind of rough.

[It's actually not that rough. She has literally been working on this song since she got here got together with Cam.]

*He raises an eyebrow.*

Looks pretty figured out to me.

I mean. I've been working on it for a while . . . [Oh god this is embarrassing she's going to die of embarrassment before she ever performs the song - hey wait. Maya finally notices the new thing hanging from Dante's neck in her desperate bid to find something else to talk about.] Did you get a crest? Is that a crest for love?

*The broad grin on his face now? It's not forced. It might show a bit of fang, but he can't help it.*

Did you something super romantic like buy her a flower store?

[Cam bought her a significant portion of a flower store, once. It seems reasonable that Dante would buy a whole flower store.]

*He'd just buy out all the roses.*

Nah. She was feelin' down in the dumps 'bout the fact that we ain't got a clue when we're gonna go home and forget all this. I just reminded her why what we do and feel here matters anyway and that the heart bein' irrational doesn't mean you gotta think without it.

*And he just...shrugs. Like there's nothing odd about a big tough swordsman giving a 'power of the heart' speech.*

[Maya nods. She feels that, man. If only her conversation with Cam had gone so smoothly.]

Cam had to break his arm to get his, but I guess that makes sense for a crest of courage . . . and something like that makes sense for the crest of love. Crests are kind of weird.

They definitely seem to have a flair for the dramatic. Suits me just fine.

*He is, after all, the guy who spontaneously went theatrical when he found himself on a stage.*

. . . Dramatics aren't really my thing. [It's different than just playing.] But I don't think this place has much regard for that.
