Feeling too much can lead to... some rather terrible consequences, and the stronger it gets... the worse that outcome will be. It's why he's distanced himself from everything, doesn't allow himself anything, will never let himself come close to anything. He had done his part by saving New York and stopping Loki. Surely that was enough. There was a limit to what he could allow himself to do before it got too dangerous.
