Act 002

[A Candlemon appears onscreen. It seems highly concerned, and it's whispering.]

Um, guys? Ryan told me I'm not supposed to use the D-terminal, but this is an emergency.

[The camera turns toward Ryan, who is singing and dancing. It seems a little frenzied, and he's obviously sweaty like he's been at it for a couple of hours.]

He's been doing this for the past couple of hours, and he hasn't stopped. I think he's going to hurt himself if he keeps it up. Please, help!

Well, it's normal for me but. You see there is no music here in this new Digital World so when I sing it's only me. [He sighs.] I'm used sudden numbers, hundreds of us all singing in key with intense and perfect choreography! But here . . . it's only . . . me.

Okay, fair enough. And you do it for several hours at a time?

No. It's usually only for like five minutes. Maybe ten tops. I come from a musical, not an opera.

So maybe you should go ahead and... y'know. Stop singing now?

I can't. It's . . . it's like a sudden swelling and out bursts a new song - it's like a spell's got hold of me and I don't know what's wrong! I'm not writing this script and I don't know who is, but this song won't stop.

[If Ed were in his right mind, he would probably try to fix things by singing back at Ryan.

Let us all thank god he is not in his right mind. Instead he just facepalms.] You're doing it again.

[Ryan very visibly swallows and takes a breath. When he talks again, it's much faster than usual.] I know. Okay, you know how some people draw on other forces to do magic? We have a force kind of like that called the music in my homeworld that we can draw on to make musical numbers, but in return it sometimes draws on us to help move the plot forward and there's nothing you can do to stop it. Right now, it feels like the same thing is happening to me, but the music doesn't exist here so I don't know why I keep singing~

[He covers his face in his hands. Noooooooooooooo. This is not how things should go.]

So it feels like that? Well, it's a weird world so let's assume that the plot is existing. So the plot is trying to move you forward with a song!

...Where's it trying to get you to?

[Ryan shrugs. His fingers are drumming against the floor like a long-time nervous habit, only it's not one.]

I don't write the script. I just perform it.

Oh.

So maybe the script just decided to make up for lost time, then..?

[He's going to say it doesn't work like that, but maybe it does here. Noticing his fingers drumming, Ryan makes a conscious effort to stop. By sitting on his hand.]

Kind of a weird plot point, but maybe. I honestly don't know, I just want it to stop.

Well, I'm sure that either everything will be fine or you'll dissolve into a puddle of ectoplasmic goop.

I dunno, man. I've seen people melt over less.

[Sarcastic jazz hands.] Yay.

You should be okay though. If you start feeling unusually incorporeal, I recommend curling up in a ball on the ground.

And how is that supposed to help me stay alive and well?

It won't, but you won't fall and bump your head when you melt into nothingness.

Why would hitting my head matter if I was melting into nothingness? [It's kind of sing-song. And Ryan pauses, like he's thinking.] How annoying is it if I talk like this?

Not that annoying.

And it would totally matter, because since your head melts last you feel it, and feeling your body melt away is bad enough. Feeling it melting away and then feeling a bump on your head? That's just insult to injury. [Nodnod.]

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. [It's still kind of sing-song. Ryan sighs.] Although I kind of hope I don't go all Wicked Witch, it seems messy.

I really hope not.

We've lost one roomie already and I haven't even met the second.

Me either. Maybe we should go ambush them and introduce ourselves at some point.
