concerto 003 [backdated to the 28th]
[As Maya and Cam are finishing up their duet, suddenly the D-Terminals are graced with a view of the Matlin family's kitchen. Katie is on the other side of the kitchen counter, although she looks younger than Cam might remember, and she's mashing something up in a bowl. It's a banana, for anyone who might recognize it.
"Why do you do that?"
The voice is considerably younger than Maya's current one, but hers all the same, and comes from somewhere behind the camera. Katie doesn't look up when Maya asks the question, just continues her mashing.
"Because it's basically ice cream."
"We have ice cream." Maya sounds suspicious of her sister. "I don't get why you're doing all this extra work."
Shaking her head, Katie snorts. "Do you know how many calories are in ice cream? This is way healthier. You want some?"
Pushing the bowl toward Maya, Katie smiles. Maya reaches out for it, and takes it while Katie turns around and grabs another banana from the freezer. "You can have that. I'll just make more for me."]
[For the majority of the City, that's the end of Maya's memory leak. For Cam, however, the screen fritzes and shows another scene.
Then, a view of some sheet music, clearly handwritten, with someone's hand resting on it and tapping a pencil. There's a knock from somewhere, and the picture swings around until it's focused on a door. "Come in!"
The door opens, Katie in the doorframe. She walks forward, and the video follows her as she sits on a bed. There's a silence that feels uneasy, and then Katie sighs.
"Maya? I . . ."
Another silence, like Maya's waiting for Katie to finish after trailing off, and then she speaks. "What's up?"
Clearly uneasy, Katie folds her arm across her body and looks down. When she speaks, it's quiet and brittle. "Don't end up sick like me, Chicken Little. Just . . . Anything I ever told you about food? Don't. Don't listen to any of it, okay? I'm an idiot."
"You're not -"
Katie looks up, eyes sharp and at odds with her withdrawn posture. "Promise me.
"I . . . I promise."
More static. Then, the picture fades in again. There's a stack of various frozen foods piled up on a counter, which Maya takes in as she walks into the kitchen. "Wow, someone's hungry."
The focus shifts to Katie, who's setting more food on the counter as Maya goes to open the fridge.
"It's not what you think." Katie hipchecks Maya out of the way. "I'm looking for something, and you're in my way."
Soda in hand, Maya backs away from the fridge, arms up in peaceful gesture. "Easy, I'm just getting a drink."
Katie is still pulling food from the freezer. Maya's eyes dart toward the food piled on the counter, and then looks back to Katie. "Is everything okay?"
This time, Maya sounds concerned. Katie turns, holding up a bag of frozen peas. "No one binges on peas. It's for my knee. Satisfied?"]

That ends pretty fast when he checks the network. It's jarring to see Katie; he knows it's her more by her voice than her looks, as he's mostly known Maya's older sister with black hair...and an extremely unhappy look on her face, most of the time.
He can't really call her "happy" though, not in the first memory. Something is off. Little things poke out at him. Little words. "Work," or "calories."
The rest of it sort of explains it all; Maya's only ever said Katie's had "problems with food" and that she has to watch out for her. Cam sort of put the rest together on his own. Now...
He flicks on the video and sets up a connection to Maya. Does she know this leaked out? Did everyone see?]
Maya. Hey, Maya, you there?
Hey, what's up?
That, uh...that memory thing... It got you too.
[Oh dear. Maya watches over it and then pop back in.]
. . . At least it's not a bad memory? [There are worse ones, is what the expression on her face says.]
[Cam can only imagine.]
It's personal. [Wait.] All three of them were, between you and Katie. [Is he angry? Maybe... She doesn't deserve having her personal memories broadcast.]
[Well. That's. Better. ...Remember Cam is the boy who got angry when he thought Maya didn't get into the school musical after meeting her all of like a day ago. Cam sighs, okay, okay.] Alright...
...Sure looks like you're becoming the go-to for creative snack ideas.
[Re: Harley + Dante.]
[It's okay, Cam. Maya's gotten kind of used to it.]
. . . Just because my sister told me to forget everything she ever told me about food doesn't mean I did. Just the bad things.
That's...real good then, taking the good, uhh... I kinda meant that, they drilled a lot of what to eat and what not to at training camp, so... I dunno, new perspectives.
[Plus Cam can't really make anything. Did you hear about that time he set an egg on fire, Maya? An egg still in the shell?]
Bet a lotta people could use it.
[...He's going to talk to Marley later. Hinting. Slowly.]
[Set an egg on fire? Dear god, does Maya have to start cooking lessons just so the building doesn't burn down? Maya's kind of quiet and then she breathes out slowly.]
There's a fine line between watching what you eat and ending up like my sister, so yeah. That's probably true.
[Neku saved the day, don't worry! ...But yeah, probably. Cam doesn't really want to press, of course, but he does want to encourage.]
I think you'd be good at that. Making sure they don't. ...If you want to, of course.

...eh...science I guess. I'll just go have a sundae and work out in the morning.
no subject
No, um. When you mash up a frozen banana, it tastes like ice cream.
My sister used to do it all the time.
no subject
Wanna go have the former robots make us some smoothies?
no subject
Um. [Calories, Maya. Maya breathes out and smiles.] That sounds like fun.

[gasp]
Oh my gosh...what if we added jelly and made a sand which smoothie?!

um...we still don't have a car.
Useless!

no subject
That actually any good?
no subject
. . . If you like bananas?
no subject
Might work with other kinds'a fruit. Probably ain't as good as a real sundae, but I'll bet it's better than nothing when I'm outta real ice cream.

*He only eats it all the time.*
...Maybe mix in some other fruits, too. Been told I should have a bit more variety in my diet.
no subject
Do you eat anything besides pizza and ice cream?
no subject
*He is...dead serious.*

[Maya starts to say something, then stops and just stares for a couple of seconds. Dante, you're really bad at food is what her expression says.]
. . . We need to get you a salad. Or even just a hamburger.
no subject
I've been eatin' better the past couple days.
no subject
[Demon hellspawn don't get beer guts? Jeez. Being human is lame. This is the face of a teenage girl who only barely believes you and suspects your idea of "eating better" means "drinking tomato juice."]
If you say so.
no subject
Relax, I already got the rundown on what a human's gotta eat.
no subject
[Maybe she'll just stick one on the fridge and title it "EAT DIFFERENT FOOD."]
