[Video] Waking Up Alone

[Garrus appears on screen, running a hand through his hair. He didn't seem sad, or shaken, or depressed, or at least he was trying not to. He was just looking for the right way to say this. Not for his sake, but for the kids. Sugar coating things was something he was never good at, so eventually, he just settled on saying it.]

Shepard's gone, and ... I don't think it's another data-stream. Don't ask me how I know, but something in my gut tells me she's back home.

[He sighs, again fishing for words. He'd been doing that a lot recently, thinking about it.]

I can't exactly speak for her, but, ah ... I'm sure she'd say she's sorry for just up and disappearing. And that if she could have, she would have said goodbye.

[There's a little loneliness in his eyes for a moment, as he offers a reassuring smile aimed at the kids.]

I'm not much of a substitute, but if anyone needs to talk, or, ... or anything, I'll be around.

[Crap. This is exactly what he was hoping to avoid. Even on his best day, he wasn't half as good at this as Shepard is, but he can't just sit back and let Marley cry her eyes out.]

I wish I could, but ... I'm sorry, but she's gone home. I know how hard this is, believe me I do ... But at least we know she's safe. She's alive, and she's home. That has to count for something, right?

[Marley gives a little whimper before ducking out of sight of her D-Terminal. A couple of choked sobs can be made out before she appears again, shaking her head slowly while trying to wipe her eyes.]

She said...She said she was staying. After the data stream--She said she would stay...

[Garrus feels a knot forming in his throat.]

And she meant it. But sometimes things happen, things you have no control over ...

[He looks a million miles away, lost in a memory of fire and death for a moment before he manages to pull himself out of it.]

She would have stayed if she could. She thinks of you like her kids, she'd do anything for you guys.

[There's more whimpering and more of her wiping her eyes before she takes in a deep breath.

No, she can't be selfish. Not now. Garrus knew Shepard longer. He loved her. How could she think about how much pain she's in when it doesn't even compare to his?

When she speaks next, her voice is a little more steady than before.]

M-May I come over? You...shouldn't be alone...

[He blinks, a little surprised at that.

[She's right though ... this hurts. It's softened by the fact that he knows she's home, that she's with the others, and that the galaxy needs her more than he does. But damn it, he wants her here. With him.]

I ... sure. I could, ah, I could use a little company.

[Marley simply nods her head slowly, wiping her eyes once more.]

Are you...in her room? Or yours? I don't know...

Hers, but, something tells me I should probably get out of here ... I'd probably be annoying her roommates by squatting here.

I don't...think they'd mind. But--

[But there might be new Chosen who will need that room. She's not so heartless to say it out loud, but the thought does flash in her mind. She bites her lower lip, a small punishment for thinking such thoughts.]

I-I can...meet you at your place? I think I know which one...

[He nods. They probably wouldn't but still ... just being here is bringing him down even more.]

Sounds good. I'll see you there.

[Marley nods slowly before turning off her D-Terminal. It's only a couple of minutes before she's knocking on the door to Garrus' apartment.]

G-Garrus? I'm...I'm here...

[It isn't more than a moment before he answers the door.]

Hey, Marley. How, ah ... how're you holding up.

[She looks up at Garrus, a stuffed Leomon doll clutched in her arms.]

I...was gonna ask you the same thing...

[She sniffs lightly and reaches up to wipe her eyes.]

I'm sorry...A-About her--

[He swallows. He's not sure if he should hug her or something.]

I'm ... as good as I can be, considering all this.

[He blinks.]

You don't have anything to be sorry about. [He smiles slightly.]

[Garrus might not initiate a hug, but Marley will. She steps forward and wraps an arm around him, the other still clutching her Leomon doll. With a shuddering breath, she rests her forehead against Garrus' shoulder. She doesn't say anything, though. She just tries to offer some comfort while seeking it out as well.]

[He stumbles a little bit in surprise. There's a moment there, where he just doesn't know what to do, but after a second, he returns the hug. He'll stay there as long as she needs him.]

[She stays like that for a few minutes before she takes in a deep breath and lifts her head up off of Garrus' shoulder.]

S-Sorry.. I just...didn't know what else to do...
