Not everyone here celebrates Christmas. Or even knows what it is.

[Judging by some of the reactions he's seen around here.]

So I want to know what winter holidays you do celebrate. Or if you don't celebrate any, what you do during the cold months.

[He pauses, mulling over what he just said.]

...and if you don't have those, what do you do at this time of year?

Well, last year I had a date. Though I can't say that's a tradition for me personally.

Not this year. I missed my chance.

I guess I was too slow. Honestly, things have been too hectic to do much in the way of dating.

Back home on Berk we celebrate Snoggletog.

We drink and celebrate and we leave our helmets out so Odin can fill them with gifts when we go to sleep.

And last year we almost blew up the village with exploding dragon eggs.

That sounds like fun.

[Even the exploding eggs part.]

And you mean real dragon eggs?

It is the most fun.

Well yeah sure, we fly dragons on Berk. I have one with two heads.

Two heads? Do they get along?

More then me and my brother do but less then most dragons.

I guess that makes sense.

[Siblings fight most of all.]

What other kinds of dragons are there?

Back home I am from a lion pride, and am one of the hunters. We really don't have a lot of celebrations, the birth of a new prince or princess who will one day be king or queen we celebrate, and when we acknowledge a new heir.

We do not suffer so much from cold times, as we do from dry times, when it is dry food can be scarce, hunting takes more and more time, and failures in the hunt are more costly. But we survive, as we always have, we make it to the rains when the world blossoms a new and the herds return.

[Ah, he's never talked to a lion before. He was hoping to hear from some of the less human residents of the city.]

So "king of the jungle" in references to lions isn't just an expression?

[motherswisdom]

I don't know about this "king of the jungle" but Simba, my mate, is king of the pridelands. All the creatures of the kingdom were at the celebration of his birth. Antelope, Zebra, Elephants, Cranes, monkeys, every creature who could make it came, except for his uncle. [The woman gives cold look at mentioning the person before shaking herself lightly.]

But... we do not live in the jungle... well Simba did for a time, while he was younger and there were... problems, but now that he is king he lives at pride rock, out in the plains where the sun reaches vast distances... Everything the sun touches is our kingdom.

Ah, it's just an expression humans used when they didn't know the difference between a jungle and a savanna.

[But to find out that it's really a kingdom? That's amazing.]

As king, what does he do?

[motherswisdom]

I see... it is a pity that some of them don't know such a difference.

As the king he tends to the balance of the kingdom. He told me once, how his father explained it to him. 'When we die, we become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass.' This is the great circle of life, and what he maintains. It is his job to see to it that no one takes more than they need. He knows if the Zebra herd is too small, or the Antelope need to be thinned. A good king can keep this balance, a poor king... can ruin it.

[Something in the way she says that tells that she has seen some results of a poor king.]

[He has to admit, he wondered why the prey animals of the kingdom would not only accept but celebrate a predator as their king, but he's starting to understand now.]

It sounds like a lot of work. I'm sure he's glad to have you helping him.

[Hollyleaf is somewhat solemn, a young woman with cat ears and a scar across her right eye to her cheek bone, matching her torn right ear.]

Leaf-bare is about survival back home. Herbs are harder to find, prey is harder to hunt... It's not exactly something to celebrate.

Ahem. He means, he listens pretty intently. He can get an idea of what Hollyleaf is talking about - survival off the land. But it's not something he truly knows.]

There isn't much to for us to celebrate during cold times either. That's one reason why the holidays exist.

It...makes some sense, but all our energy should be focused on hunting.

Animal culture is much different, I'm learning.

Once upon a time, we humans were like that.

But we've since grown soft and comfy and are able to do things like that. When you don't have to worry about your survival every day, it gives time for things like that.

[Lightly, she snorts.] Sounds like the life of a kittypet... I've seen humans, in big dens, and heard of relaxing lives... I could never do it. A warrior's life for me.

[Pride, it seems, is part of the "warrior" life she speaks of as well.]

You must find it very strange to live among humans then.
