Uh...hi, I guess.

[A slightly awkward teenager(?) appears onscreen, sounding as uncertain as he looks. He's apparently found apartment F1 001, as the background seems to be a bedroom.]

My name's Waver Velvet, and I just got here recently. I wanted to ask--does anyone know if there's a library or a bookstore anywhere?

[He's in for a nasty shock: the poor kid can't read Japanese worth a damn.]

You speak japanese? You're out of luck if you don't. We've had a hell of a time finding anything in english. It'd help if the Cadet could tell the difference between languages...

[In spite of her apparent grump with her partner, she pats him on the head anyways.]

Uh--n-no, I can't.

[Sighing, Waver pressed a hand to his head. It looked like he just heard the world was ending.]

Is that really all there is?

[She shakes her head.]

It's not all, it's just most of it. Including all of the medical books we've found, which is a huge headache.

Is there anybody that can translate them?

The translators will handle it if somebody reads anything aloud to you, from what I've seen. One of my roommates only speaks Japanese but I understand him just fine. It's only written stuff that's a problem.

That's...kind of strange.

Language translators where I'm from go cross-species. It doesn't surprise me that they have japanese to english here.

I don't think we have those where I come from--there's probably magecraft for translating things like that, but I'm not sure.

[She looks rather surprised.]

As in magic?

Uh...y-yeah. I guess there's probably not a whole lot of reason to keep it secret here; there's already a lot weirder things than magi running around.

[Shepard sighs heavily.]

The things I'm accepting as nothing worse than oddities these days are absurd.

Considering there's a talking, breathing plant with eyes and a mouth sleeping on my bed, I'm pretty sure there's a new upper limit on 'weird' now.

[Shepard snorts a laugh.]

I like you, kid. You've got your head screwed on straight.

I'm Commander Shepard, by the way. Your name is Waver, right?

Yeah, that's right...sorry, commander of what?

I have a starship back home, but it's mostly just my military rank.

A...starship. Are you actually serious?

Entirely. The SSV Normandy. I take it you don't have space travel yet where you're from?

Well....yeah, but not to the point where you'd hear someone just say 'I have a starship'.

That's not exactly common where I'm from either, to be honest.

So it's not common for people to travel like that?

Not unless they're trying to get to another planet.

Is that some kind of thing people do all the time?

Well, not everyone, but humans get around. Off-world colonies and all that.
