You will have to excuse my ignorance, for though I have made attempts to study humans, the longer I stay here, the more I realize that I actually know very little.

But, I am sure you have noticed that there has been much talk of "birthdays" recently. Would anyone happen to be willing to explain to me what exactly a "birthday" is, and why it is so important?

Ah... that's tough to explain.

At 13, you become a teenager. It's a big deal. Ah... it varies from place to place, but where I'm from you become an adult in society's eyes at 18. So becoming 13 is a step closer and by then the kids know it.

At 20, you've only been considered an adult for a couple years, but by 30 you're supposed to be settled with a job and all that.

You are correct. It does, in fact, have to do with the whole digital world thing! Before I came here, I was not human, you see. Though my family and I rule the cosmos, I am sad to say that I had not yet had the opportunity to learn much about humans. But my chance has come at last! What better way to learn but by being?
